BEIJING, May 5 (Xinhua) -- China's state news agency, Xinhua, and the UN's anti-AIDS body agreed here Tuesday to boost cooperation on the global fight against AIDS.

Xinhua possesses enormous media resources and stands ready to play an active role in the UN's anti-AIDS and other causes, Xinhua President Cai Mingzhao said in a meeting with Michel Sidibe, executive director of the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

Xinhua, Cai stressed, hopes that the two sides will explore new patterns of cooperation and make joint contributions to the progress and development of the human race.

By expanding its presence on global social networks like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube and other means, Xinhua is reaching an ever larger audience worldwide, Cai noted.

He added that the news agency is willing to help disseminate such positive messages as the UN's "Three Zeros" vision of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths.

Sidibe, who is also an under-secretary-general of the United Nations, said he appreciates Xinhua's efforts and hopes that the strategic cooperation between the two sides will reach new heights.

UNAIDS would like to propagate China's achievements in the area of public health and tell the whole world of "the Chinese stories," he said, noting that successful experiences can generate more resources for the global battle against the common threat.

The meeting came a day after Sidibe, together with Executive Director Mark Dybul of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, met with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

During their meeting, Li pledged that China will cooperate more with the international community in the prevention and control of infectious diseases.
